On 17 May 2017, the Council of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) agreed to invite the Argentine Republic to become a full member of the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) and its Data Bank.

The request for membership, officially submitted in November 2016, shows the commitment by the Argentine Government to nuclear energy development for solely peaceful purposes, a State Policy which has supported the Argentine nuclear industry since its beginnings almost seventy years ago.

The NEA is a semi-autonomous intergovernmental agency within the framework of the OECD, headquartered in Boulogne, France. It seeks to facilitate cooperation among countries with advanced nuclear technology in order to achieve excellence in different fields pertaining to nuclear technology, such as nuclear technology safety and various scientific developments as regards the peaceful uses of this type of technology.

In addition, the Data Bank of the NEA is the main international centre of reference for cooperation on the exchange of scientific information and advanced computer codes in the nuclear field.

The membership process will be concluded with an exchange of notes scheduled for early June in the context of OECD Week 2017.

This decision represents an acknowledgement by the most advanced countries in the field of nuclear energy not only of Argentina’s considerable development in this regard and its high safety standards, but also of our country’s progressive insertion into international fora and efforts regarding nuclear energy.
