25 November has been designated the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women by United Nations General Assembly Resolution 54/134.

Argentina’s foreign policy as regards the prevention and elimination of violence and assistance to victims is in line with the importance ascribed to these matters at a domestic level. 2016 marked an important milestone in this regard, as President Macri launched the first National Plan for the Prevention, Punishment, and Eradication of Violence Against Women, in order to implement the Comprehensive Protection Act to Prevent, Punish, and Eradicate Violence Against Women in the Development of their Interpersonal Relationships.

Argentina has adhered to international standards on the prevention and punishment of violence against women and girls. Of the utmost importance for the protection of human rights and, in particular, of women’s rights is the fact that the Argentine Constitution safeguards the free exercise of political rights through real equal opportunities between men and women (Article 37) and provides that international human rights treaties incorporated into the Constitution, including the 1979 Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), have constitutional rank and must be understood as supplementary to the rights and safeguards enshrined in the Constitution itself.

In this context, the Argentine Foreign Ministry supports, promotes and works towards the implementation of conventions, resolutions and other international and regional instruments in furtherance of the elimination of violence against women.

Argentina is strongly committed to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals proposed within the 2030 Agenda, which not only include the specific goal of eliminating all forms of violence against women and girls, but also state that no development is possible if more than half of the population is not taken into account.
