Climate Change: Meeting in the context of the UN General Assembly

This morning, Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie participated with other leaders in a working breakfast on climate change and energy, within the framework of the United Nations General Assembly.  The meeting was held as a high-level informal discussion on climate change and energy, as well as on the different political approaches to tackle this issue.

The breakfast was also attended by the Foreign Ministers of Japan, Taro Kono, and of Australia, Julie Bishop; the German State Secretary for the Environment, Jochen Flasbarth; the European Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy, Miguel Arias Cañete, and the Chinese Minister for the Environment, Chen Jining, along with sherpas of other countries.

Among the topics discussed, the Presidents of G-20 member countries reaffirmed their commitment to reaching consensus among the Group to promote advances on the climate change agenda. The Argentine Foreign Minister remarked Argentina’s will to help in identifying interests shared by all G-20 members, in order to join forces and achieve practical and positive results for the benefit of all the parties.

In addition, Faurie reaffirmed Argentina’s commitment to the Paris Agreement, based on the belief that it is possible to achieve the goal of limiting the increase in global temperature, highlighting the importance of setting more ambitious goals of climate action.

This informal meeting was convened by Gary Cohn, the Director of the U.S. National Economic Council and U.S. President Donald Trump’s top economic adviser.
