The 2016 edition of the Frankfurt Book Fair —the most important fair in the publishing field at the global level— will take place from 19 to 23 October. Since 2009, the Argentine Republic has had a strong and constant institutional presence, with its own stand and an agenda of cultural and literary activities that has enabled many Argentine authors and foreign scholars, such as Roger Chartier and Robert Darnton, to participate as guests. In this new edition, the guest authors will be Hernán Ronsino, Gabriela Cabezón Cámara, Inés Fernández Moreno, and Perla Suez.

As in previous years, a 128 m2 institutional stand has been set up, in which images of renowned Argentine authors and artists will be displayed, with special focus on Jorge Luis Borges and Alberto Ginastera on the 100th anniversary of their births.

Twenty-one Argentine publishing houses —out of which more than ten are university presses— will participate in the Fair in order to present their books and sell their publications. The stand is entirely funded by the Argentine Foreign Ministry, thus facilitating the participation of small and mediumd-sized publishing houses and microenterprises with a special budget.

Furthermore, the Argentine Ministry of Culture has invited four independent publishers for their first experience at the Fair, who will hold a series of meetings at the Argentine pavilion, coordinated by the TyPA Foundation.

SUR TRANSLATION SUPPORT PROGRAMME

As part of the schedule arranged for the auditorium of the Argentine stand, it is worth highlighting the promotion of the SUR TRANSLATION SUPPORT PROGRAMME, a permanent policy of the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship that is implemented within the framework of its General Directorate for Cultural Affairs.

On Thursday 20 October, a round table discussion called Translation subsidies as a State Policy will be held together with the highest authorities of the translation programmes of the Republic of Serbia and the Italian Republic. The aim is to discuss common experiences and future strategies for the countries’ respective national literature in the field of global translation. Prior to the discussion, a cocktail will be held to honour foreign publishers who have received subsidies for the publication of Argentine works in other languages.

Since its creation in 2009, the SUR TRANSLATION SUPPORT PROGRAMME has subsidized the translation of 1060 Argentine works by more than 380 authors, in 46 countries and into 40 languages. It is expected that support will be provided for 150 new works in 2017.

ARGENTINE AGENDA

One of the main events will be the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the passing of Jorge Luis Borges, with the participation of guest authors, foreign scholars, and literary translators. Furthermore, there will be presentations on the Argentine publishing sector for publishing professionals from all over the world, as well as on university presses in Argentina and the role of scouts, translators and other literary intermediaries in the promotion of literature, among other activities.

Another important event will be the International Convention of University Presses, which will be launched in the Argentine stand and will be attended by Latin American university publishers. After the Fair, the guest Argentine authors will participate in an international seminar at the University of Cologne and will also give a talk at the Cervantes Institute, in Frankfurt.
