National Action Plan for the Prevention, Assistance and Eradication of Violence against Women

A “Working Table with International Organizations on the 2017-2019 National Action Plan for the Prevention, Assistance and Eradication of Violence against Women,” recently launched by President Mauricio Macri, took place at the Foreign Ministry on Tuesday, 16 August.

At the meeting, the Chair of the National Council of Women, Fabiana Túnez, presented the Plan and had a dialogue with representatives of international organizations, including the Office of the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Argentina, the Regional Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), UNAIDS, UNICEF, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Representative in Argentina, and representatives of the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

The 2017-2019 National Action Plan for the Prevention, Assistance and Eradication of Violence against Women is a fundamental tool to systematize actions and measures that enable the Government to provide an effective, comprehensive answer to gender-based violence issues, make diagnoses, and monitor the impact of lines of action, as well as to articulate work with provinces in order to attain protection and prevention standards across the country. According to National Council of Women statistics, in Argentina, every 37 hours a woman is murdered just because she is a woman, and our country is one of the five countries with the highest femicide rates per 10,000 inhabitants.

Adopting this plan is an achievement as regards progress in the prevention and elimination of this scourge, and has proven fundamental to demonstrate Argentina’s commitment in this field at an international level, which has led to the signing of a Letter of Intent between the Argentine Republic and UN Women, executed by Foreign Minister Malcorra and the regional director of said international organization on 8 August 2016, on the occasion of UN Secretary-General Bank Ki-moon’s visit, for the purpose of establishing a UN Women Country Office in Argentina.

Also, the presentation of the plan had a very positive impact on all United Nations agencies with a presence in Argentina, which were at the meeting to celebrate its adoption and offer their lines of cooperation in order to support this process.
