Mercosur – European Union negotiations continue

Today, within the framework of Uruguay’s Pro Tempore Presidency of MERCOSUR, Uruguayan Foreign Minister Rodolfo Nin Novoa had a working meeting with EU Commissioner for Trade Cecilia Malmstrom in Brussels, Kingdom of Belgium.

During the meeting, Nin Novoa and Commissioner Malmstrom agreed that MERCOSUR and the EU will exchange their market access offers for goods, services and government procurement in the second week of May.

Furthermore, the Uruguayan Foreign Minister and Commissioner Malmstrom agreed on a busy work schedule for 2016, which will ensure progress in all areas of negotiation with a view to reaching a successful conclusion of negotiations soon.

This is a decisive and important step in the negotiation process between both blocs, after years of deadlock.

Both Nin Novoa and Commissioner Malmstrom highlighted once more the political willingness of both parties to start a substantive and serious negotiation process that will ensure the conclusion of a MERCOSUR-EU association agreement, which will offer opportunities for further development of their people.
