Foreign Minister Faurie met with his Canadian counterpart, Chrystia Freeland

 Yesterday, Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie held a bilateral meeting with his Canadian counterpart, Minister of Foreign Affairs Chrystia Freeland.

During the meeting, they reviewed several aspects of the bilateral relationship between Argentina and Canada, and analyzed the regional context, particularly as regards the situation in Venezuela. In addition, they underscored the progress made in the fulfilment of the concrete goals that had been established by the Heads of Government of the two countries on the occasion of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s visit in November 2016.

As regards the bilateral context, the Ministers underscored the mutual achievements relating to the access for national products to their respective markets and they agreed to continue strengthening the economic bilateral relationship. Furthermore, they welcomed the steady progress towards a prompt beginning of trade negotiations between Mercosur and Canada.

The Ministers also highlighted the importance of strengthening their national economies to achieve inclusive growth through the creation of jobs for their peoples.

In addition, they agreed to continue coordinating actions and policies at international fora aimed at securing global sustainable growth. In this regard, Minister Freeland wished Argentina every success in the organization of the upcoming WTO Ministerial Conference to be held in Buenos Aires in December and stated that Canada will support Argentina.

Finally, the Ministers pledged to cooperate closely as Canada and Argentina take on the G-7 and G-20 Presidencies, respectively.

Foreign Minister Faurie and Minister Freeland will meet again today in Toronto within the framework of the third Ministerial Meeting of the Lima Group.
