Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Foradori held a work meeting yesterday with a group of German MPs who represent the main political parties of their country.

The visiting delegation was led by Klaus Barthel (Social Democratic Party of Germany), Chair of the German-South American Parliamentary Group of the German Bundestag, and Deputy Chair Philipp Murmann (Christian Democratic Union of Germany).

At the meeting, several aspects of the bilateral relations were discussed: the upcoming visits of President Mauricio Macri to Germany and that of the German Minister of Foreign Affairs, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, to Argentina; the need to foster bilateral trade and German investments (which create jobs) in Argentina; and the importance of continuing to strengthen scientific and technological cooperation.

Deputy Foreign Minister Foradori noted that, since President Macri took office, it has become a priority of Argentine foreign policy to put Argentina back on the world scene, within a framework of strengthening of relations with the countries of the European Union, as well as building on the historical and cultural roots that have traditionally brought together Argentina and Germany.

MP Klaus Barthel stated that the upcoming visit of President Macri to Germany demonstrates Argentina’s interest in the promotion of bilateral relations, and agreed that the social and cultural heritage shared by the two countries is a solid basis to better exploit the potential of bilateral relations.

Barthel was also interested in Argentina’s policy on receiving Syrian refugees, and he explained Germany’s role in Europe as the main host State for Syrian refugees fleeing the terrible war in their homeland. Foradori stated that Argentina has a solidarity policy as regards the events in the Middle East, as evidenced by the fact that Foreign Minister Malcorra has personally led a delegation that includes a team of experts to offer humanitarian aid in refugee camps in Lebanon.
