On the sidelines of the Mercosur meeting held in Asunción, Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie and his Paraguayan counterpart, Eladio Loizaga, signed a Memorandum of Understanding establishing a Bilateral Mechanism for Dialogue and Cooperation on Human Rights between the Foreign Ministries of the two countries.

Through this document signed yesterday by the Foreign Ministers, Argentina and Paraguay established a mechanism for sharing best practices on human rights and holding a regular dialogue on the two countries’ positions regarding the main international negotiations on the matter. The agreement also provides for the possibility of developing joint cooperation projects and promoting academic activities.

The document reaffirms both countries’ commitment to promoting universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, to full respect for international human rights law and to the priority assigned to human rights defence by Governments that see democracy as the only viable way of achieving the legitimate aspirations of their peoples.

This agreement is part of the Argentine Foreign Ministry’s policy of holding bilateral dialogue on human rights with various countries from the region and beyond, with a view to promoting and protecting human rights.
