About Giethoorn :
Do you know Giethoorn is known as Venice of the North or Venice of the Netherlands?
Giethoorn is a car-free village in the northeastern of Netherlands. It’s known for its boat-filled waterways, footpaths, bicycle trails and centuries-old thatched-roof houses. It borders with the Weerribben-Wieden National Park, a marshy area once popular for peat and reed harvesting.

Giethoorn with its many waterways and bridges is well-known as the Venice of the Netherlands. It is the famous, idyllic village without streets in the northernmost tip of Overijssel.

It became well known in 1958 when it was featured in the film Fanfare, made Dutch filmmaker Bert Haanstra. … This idyllic village has no roads, and the only access is water over the many beautiful canals or on foot over its wooden arch bridges.

Most of the homes in Giethoorn sit on small private islands that are only connected the more than 100 wooden bridges that criss-cross the landscape.
Enjoy this wonderful walking tour through picturesque Giethoorn. Walk past the beautiful thatched-roof farm houses with their lovely hydrangeas and watch the boats and the water from the characteristic wooden bridges. Go for a walk through Giethoorn. Enjoy the farms, bridges and water.

There are no roads in Giethoorn, the picturesque hamlet known as the “Dutch Venice.” In the tiny Dutch village of Giethoorn, the tranquility is almost dreamlike. That is, until you remember why it’s so quiet—there are no cars. In fact, there’s no way for cars to get around, because there are no roads.
