On Tuesday night Gibraltar made history by winning their UEFA Nations League group to gain promotion to league C.

Success came after a hard fought campaign that culminated with a draw at home to group favourites Liechtenstein.

After wins against both San Marino and Liechtenstein, only a draw was needed last night at the Victoria Stadium, and Julio Ribas’ team needed little motivation to go out and battle as they have done under the inspirational Uruguayan since his appointment in 2018.

In windy conditions and without home support in the stadium an own goal by Frommelt gave Gibraltar the early advantage needed to make it an uphill battle for the visitors who had the better share of possession in the first half – and it showed as they equalised rather fortuitously moments before half time.

The second half was dominated by Liechtenstein but a monumental effort by all the Gibraltarian players meant that now they can look forward to playing the likes of Northern Ireland, Serbia, Bulgaria and Slovakia.
