Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly, alongside her Danish counterpart Jeppe Kofod, signed a historic agreement Tuesday, ending a decades-long dispute over Hans Island, a tiny island in the Arctic.
“I laughed. I couldn’t believe that we were actually able to settle this very important issue. And we wanted to give momentum, particularly in light of Feb. 24 with what happened with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. And so it’s symbolic because of the time that it is happening as we’re seeing here there is an illegal and unjustifiable invasion,” Joly said.
The 1.3-square-kilometre barren rock has been the subject of decades of diplomatic disputes between the two nations as it sits in the territorial waters of both.
The agreement will divide the uninhabited island between Ellesmere Island, in Nunavut, and Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory.
In 1984, Canada planted a flag on the island and left a bottle of Canadian whisky. Later that year, Denmark planted a flag and left a bottle of their own spirits.
In the years that followed, more flags and more bottles of whiskey would be left behind in what would become known as “The Whiskey War.”
