The Foreign Ministers of the Argentine Republic and the Federative Republic of Brazil, Susana Malcorra and José Serra, signed the “Memorandum of Understanding for the creation of a Bilateral Mechanism for Political Coordination”, in furtherance of the commitment made in this regard, on the occasion of Brazilian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergio Danese’s visit to Argentina, on 14 March.

The Memorandum provides an appropriate legal framework to regularly follow up on strategic bilateral projects and initiatives in the fields of science, technology, infrastructure, energy and defence, without prejudice to the inclusion of other sectors that both governments may consider priorities. Moreover, it has the necessary flexibility to operate as a space for coordinating positions on key topics on the regional and international agenda.

The fact that the deputy foreign ministers are the officials in charge of coordinating the organization of meetings, the design of work agendas and the actual regularity of meetings, will make it possible to give continuity to and follow up on the discussion, negotiation and implementation of substantive items on the bilateral foreign policy agenda, regardless of the internal political situation of the signatories.
