A High-Level Meeting on global responsibility sharing through pathways for admission of Syrian refugees was held today in Geneva and opened by the Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi.

The aim of the meeting was for States to assume commitments to provide cooperation with regard to the tragic situation of Syrian refugees in different neighbouring countries of Syria who are suffering the consequences of the war in this region of the Middle East.

During the international meeting, a video was screened with a message sent by Foreign Minister Susana Malcorra, who expressed her concern for the seriousness of the Syrian conflict and highlighted the different measures being implemented in Argentina to collaborate with the victims of this forced displacement, both in terms of migration and protection of refugees, as well as to improve the humanitarian situation on the ground through missions led by the White Helmets Commission.

In turn, Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Foradori, who headed the Argentine delegation including the National Director of Migrations, Horacio Garcia, explained, during a panel discussion showcasing “Best Practices for the Admission of Syrian Refugees”, all the actions deployed in Argentina in connection with the reception of these refugees, noting that “if no joint efforts are made by the international community as a whole, we will hardly be able to achieve long-lasting and permanent solutions to the current refugee crisis.”

Ambassador Foradori reaffirmed Foreign Minister Malcorra’s statements and expressed his hope that this strategy will “imply a radical change in global culture that will categorically affirm the principle of non-indifference among States. This will ensure that our eyes will not look away from other people’s misery, but rather focus on a common goal and the shared aim of saving this part of humanity, which is at high risk of being abandoned due to collective indifference.”
