This week, the teams of Mercosur and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) – comprised of Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein- will conduct intensive negotiations at the Palacio San Martín.

This is the fifth round of negotiations since the official launch of negotiations for a comprehensive free trade agreement in March 2016. In the previous round, the parties exchanged goods, services and investment offers.

In this new round of negotiations, the parties will focus on the agreement on “modalities” for the exchange of improved offers in December 2018. MERCOSUR and EFTA expect to conclude negotiations in 2019.

These negotiations, along with negotiations held with the European Union, Canada, Korea and Singapore, are part of the strategy followed by the four members of MERCOSUR to prioritize those countries or regional groups which specially attract the export offer of the bloc and are among the main sources of foreign direct investment.
