Meeting of MERCOSUR Political Agreement and Consultation Forum

Within the framework of Argentina’s Presidency Pro Tempore of MERCOSUR, two sessions of the 84th Meeting of MERCOSUR Political Agreement and Consultation Forum were held on April 25 and 26 at the Palacio San Martín. The session of Member States was held in the morning, while the session including Associate States was held in the afternoon. The meeting was attended by the Delegations of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Perú. Both sessions were chaired by the Undersecretary for Latin American and Caribbean Affairs of the Argentine Foreign Minister, Ambassador Lila Roldán Vázquez, who thanked the Argentine representatives for their participation and expressed our country’s interest in boosting MERCOSUR for it to consolidate at the core of regional integration.

She also reiterated the commitment of the Argentine Presidency Pro Tempore to the participation of the Associate States and reminded participants that such commitment is in agreement with Argentina’s foreign policy of openness to the world, beginning with our region.

The National Coordinators shared the progress registered during the first quarter at the ministerial meetings of High Authorities and at the specialized meetings on MERCOSUR political and social affairs. In this regard, the delegations welcomed Chile’s and Colombia’s will to adhere to the MERCOSUR Agreements on migration and education.

Furthermore, they exchanged views on the possible ways of making MERCOSUR and UNASUR work together, since Argentina is currently holding the Presidency Pro Tempore of both forums. In addition, at the session of Member States, the progress in the MERCOSUR-EU negotiation was analyzed.
