Today in New York, Argentine Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Ireland, Simon Coveney, within the framework of the 72nd Session of the United Nations General Assembly, in which both Ministers are participating.

The Ministers discussed the status of MERCOSUR-EU negotiations, especially regarding the sensitive issues in this process. In the case of Ireland, such issues involve the impact that beef imports from Mercosur may have on the country.

Furthermore, the Irish Minister expressed his support for Argentina’s OECD membership bid.

In addition, Minister Coveney informed his Argentine counterpart that the process for Irish nationals abroad to participate in presidential elections, including Irish nationals in Argentina, will soon be put into practice. Apart from English-speaking countries, Argentina is home to the largest Irish diaspora (over half a million people).

Finally, they discussed the possibility of a visit to Argentina by the Irish Minister next year.
