Today, at the headquarters of the Argentine Mission to the United Nations, Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie met with the Secretary General of Amnesty International, Salil Shetty.

They exchanged views on the continued treatment of the issue of migration and refugees as Germany hands over the G20 Presidency to Argentina. They agreed on the importance of addressing this issue from a broad perspective, given the different situations that give rise to migration in each region of the world.

They also underscored the leading work of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and agreed on the importance of strengthening and boosting its work supporting countries so as to achieve lasting solutions for refugees.

In addition, they discussed the crisis affecting Venezuela and their shared concern over the human rights violation suffered by the Venezuelan people. They agreed on the need to set up an elections calendar, release political prisoners, restore the powers of the National Assembly and effectively enforce the separation of powers.

Furthermore, they underscored the importance of the international community’s strong call for dialogue in order for Venezuela to overcome the humanitarian crisis it is undergoing.
