Argentine citizen Manuel Otero appointed Director General of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA)

Today, the Inter-American Board of Agriculture appointed Manuel Otero as Director General of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) for the period 2018-2022.

Mr. Otero is an Argentine citizen who trained as a Veterinary Doctor, worked for the Argentine Government for 10 years as Agricultural Attaché at the Argentine Embassy in the United States and as Vice President of the National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA), and has spent the last 25 years of his career at the IICA.

Upon accepting his appointment, Otero thanked President Macri, Minister Buryaile, Foreign Ministry authorities and the governments of IICA member countries for the trust placed in him and for the work that allowed him to secure his position.

The new Director General pledged to work tirelessly for the benefit of all the countries in the region, particularly as regards food security, climate change and family-based agriculture, as well as to continue the financial reengineering work of the IICA. He further stated that the American continent can position itself as a key actor in the face of the challenges posed by food security and global environmental sustainability.

The Argentine Government welcomes Otero’s appointment to the IICA and renews its commitment to continue cooperating with other countries in the region in the context of the Institute. 

The IICA is the specialized agricultural agency of the Inter-American System that supports the efforts of Member States to achieve agricultural development and rural welfare. It was established in 1944, although its history dates back to Pan-American Union initiatives from 1930. Its headquarters are in the city of San José, Costa Rica.
