The Argentine Government welcomes the admission of Argentina as the 29th member of the Governing Council of the Community of Democracies.

Although Argentina has been a member of the Community of Democracies since its creation in the year 2000, it only applied for Governing Council membership in June 2016.

Having been admitted, Argentina will be able to participate in the Council for the first time on 22 September, during the Council Session of the Community of Democracies to be held in New York City, on the margins of the 71th UN General Assembly.

The Governing Council is the main decision-making body of the Community of Democracies, which is an inter-governmental coalition of democratic countries that has the goal of supporting the strengthening and consolidation of democratic governance worldwide, through the promotion and protection of democratic values and institutions in national and international contexts.

The admission of Argentina to the Governing Council of the Community of Democracies reflects the commitment of the Argentine Government to a deeper insertion of the country into the international community, always based on the defence of democracy, human rights, the rule of law, and individual freedoms, which are essential pillars of republican governance.
