On 20 October 2016, the Argentine Deputy Foreign Minister, Ambassador Carlos Foradori, held a working meeting in Seoul with the Deputy Foreign Minister of the Republic of Korea, Ambassador Lim Sung-nam, within the framework of the 6th Round of High-Level Political Consultations between the Republic of Korea and the Argentine Republic.

Both delegations reviewed the bilateral agenda. In this context, Deputy Foreign Minister Foradori referred to the renewed impetus that President Mauricio Macri’s administration has given to Argentina’s relations with Korea, as well as to the enormous potential of the bilateral ties on several issues, such as cooperation, trade, investment, and modernization of the State, among others.

After listing the different areas in which both countries have concrete possibilities of strengthening bilateral cooperation, Deputy Foreign Minister Foradori focused on the importance of addressing items on the agenda that will produce mutually beneficial results, based on the opportunities that Argentina has to offer at this time of reinsertion into the world.

Deputy Foreign Minister Foradori asked his counterpart to strengthen the existing bilateral trade relations and, especially, to speed up the process for opening the Korean market to Argentine products as important as beef, chicken and blueberries, which is already under way. Similarly, they agreed to make progress on the steps towards reaching a free trade agreement between the Republic of Korea and MERCOSUR.

In addition, they reviewed several bilateral agreement drafts that are being negotiated and some inter-institutional memoranda of understanding that are close to being signed in several fields, including: environment, sports, culture, tourism, health, intellectual property, investment and trade dialogue cooperation, among others, as a way to enhance bilateral ties.

Finally, both delegations addressed the need to increase bilateral cooperation and dialogue on issues of shared interest both at the United Nations and at other international organizations, as well as to unify their positions at multilateral fora such as FEALAC and the G20, where both countries have undertaken to work in furtherance of international development and peace.

This political consultation mechanism provides for an annual meeting of high-level authorities of both Foreign Ministries to make progress on the bilateral agenda and strengthen the existing friendly relations between both countries.
