Today, Foreign Minister Faurie held a meeting with a group of foreign ambassadors in Brasilia, at which he stated that, since President Macri took office, “Argentina is undergoing a political, economic, institutional and cultural transformation”.

The meeting, held at the Argentine Embassy in the context of the Foreign Minister’s visit to the neighbouring country, sought to address a score of ambassadors to Argentina and concurrent ambassadors to Brazil. An embassy with concurrent accreditation is an embassy based in a given country that is also in charge of issues pertaining to one or several other countries, generally within the region. In this case, the embassies involved are based in Brazil and address bilateral relationships with Argentina.

“On an international level, aside from macroeconomic stabilization, we have embarked upon a process of reintegration and confidence-building,” Faurie stated before the foreign diplomats, in addition to highlighting the need for “a pragmatic and foreseeable approach to international relations, in which the determining factor is the concrete interest of both parties.”

Faurie underscored the importance of “reaching a MERCOSUR-EU agreement, having opened dialogue between MERCOSUR and the Pacific Alliance, and establishing and strengthening contacts with many other partners.”

The Argentine Foreign Minister highlighted that in the face of “global events that give rise to uncertainty and of calls for closing borders to trade and to people, we are utterly convinced that integration and equality are the only enduring way of establishing connections with others.” He also added that “Argentina strongly believes, based on its own experience, that trade and integration create more and better opportunities for development.”

“Our challenge is food safety: Argentina has a population of 40 million, but we intend to produce food for 400 million people,” he stressed.

In addition, the Argentine Minister reminded ambassadors that “Argentina will host the WTO Ministerial Conference next December and chair the G20 in 2018,” and mentioned that “these two important events are achievements of
the first stage of our reintegration, but they also entail great responsibility for us.”

During his address, Foreign Minister Faurie was joined by the Secretary for International Economic Relations, Horacio Reyser, and by the Argentine Ambassador to Brazil, Carlos Magariños. Also present at the meeting were the Jamaican Ambassador, Alison Elisabeth Stone Roofe; the Zambian Ambassador, Cynthia Mizoli Jangulo; the Ethiopian Ambassador, Sinknesh Ejigu; the Namibian Ambassador, Samuel Sheefeni Nuuyoma, the Burmese Ambassador, Tun Nay Lin; the Malian Ambassador, Mamadou Macki Traoré; the Kazakhstani Ambassador, Kairat Sarzhanov; the Cameroonian Ambassador, Martin Agbor Mbeng; the Ambassador of Trinidad and Tobago, Amery Browne; the Cypriot Ambassador, Haralambos Kafkarides; the Nepalese Ambassador, Tara Prasad Pokharel; the Mozambican Ambassador, Tomás Manuel Lubisse; the Guyanese Ambassador, George Wilfred Talbot; the Gabonese Ambassador, Jacques Michel Moudotte-Bell; the Senegalese Ambassador, Fatoumata Binetou Rassoul Correa, the Beninese Ambassador, Boniface Vignon; the Chargé d’affaires of Côte d´Ivoire, De Raymond Bomoi; the Chargé d’affaires of the Congo, Victorien Obouangongo; the Chargé d’affaires of Mauritania, Baba El Bechir, the Chargé d’affaires of Guinea, Abou Sylla; the Chargé d’affaires of Cabo Verde, Fatima Almeida; the Chargé d’affaires of Albania, Nuri Domiel; the Chargé d’affaires of Oman, Said Al Riyami; and the Kenyan Councillor, Stanley Kimani Mwangi.
